The Bear Book II: Further Readings in the History and Evolution of a Gay Male Subculture ? Les K. Wright, editor

Bears -- hairy, hefty, adult gay and bisexual men originally found themselves on the periphery of the gay community. As self-identifying bears caught on, the bear community took root and sprouted wings. Attempting to collect more snapshots in time of the rapidly changing bear community, Bear Book II offers additional bear voices, the rise of a bear culture of music, art, and literature, as well as further historical and philosophical dimensions. Of note is the supplemental color plates documenting parts of the Bear Icons & Beyond art exhibition series of 1999-2002, the earliest effort to present an overview of the highly diverse and lively visions of bearness.

Bear Book I & II were conceived as a case study of a gay community in its historical formation. As a set, they represent a unique and extensive, though by no means exhaustive, study, an album of verbal "snapshots in time" from a history in the making. Still the only books published on bear history to date.
